So we all remember the BBC's documentary called 'Welcome to Lagos' which caused an uproar amongst Nigerians because some felt it was a disparaging representation whilst others felt it was factual. I am of the latter group, I felt it showed the resilience of the poor and underprivileged (except for the politician, I'm not sure what that was all about) in Lagos and their entrepreneurial spirit. Lagosians are known for their commercial strength and we can't take that away from them no matter the circumstances. Poverty, hunger, and homelessness are real issues for developing countries and even though Nigeria should have outgrown the "third-world" tag, we haven't and it is what it is.
Anyway, BBC is back with 'Welcome to India' with a population definitely larger than Nigeria, and the Rupee way more undervalued than the Naira (against the Pound) but with the same issues of poverty, unemployment with a need to be innovative in surviving the odds. It is certainly just as realistic as the first instalment and should be interesting to watch the next few episodes.
Check it out on BBC 2 on Wednesday at 9.00pm. If you missed the first episode, you can catch that on iPlayer on the following link:
