Shipment of newly designed $100 bills stolen at Philly Airport

A 'large amount' of newly designed and unreleased $100 bills may be out on the streets sooner than expected.

A courier reported a large theft of the colourful C-notes originally set for release in 2013 while bound for New Jersey's Federal Reserve Building in East Rutherford on Thursday.

The heist of the unique bills is said by the FBI to have taken place sometime around 10.25am after landing at Philadelphia International Airport from Dallas, Texas.

Unintentionally released: A batch of newly designed and unofficially released $100 bills, one pictured, were stolen from a Philadelphia airport on Thursday
It was only until the shipment arrived around 2pm at the Federal Reserve Building that the courier service noticed and reported it missing to the FBI.

Agent Frank Burton Jr. said the cash was stolen from the plane.
With a new design and sophisticated elements to thwart counterfeiters, investigators said these Benjamins are easy to spot.

Along with a large gold '100' graphic on its backside, they also feature a new orange inkwell and a bright blue security ribbon.

There's also a disappearing Liberty Bell.

Describing the amount taken only as a 'large amount' of bills, agents aren't giving specifics.
